SENSITIZATION SEMINAR ON GHS/ DDR PDF Print E-mail
In pursuance of one its mandates- to provide chemistry-related education to its members in particular and the public in general, the Institute recently

organized her year 2011 sensitization seminar on Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) and Drug Demand Reduction (DDR). This is a sensitization programme aimed at reducing the incidences of chemical hazards and abuse of chemical compounds commonly referred to as drugs among our people in order to preserve our future generation.
Paper Presentation 
The first presentation was made by Dr. (Mrs)  Adebola Oketola of chemistry department, University of Ibadan, on behalf of Prof. Oladele Osibanjo. Her paper dwelt extensively on Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
The second presentation was made by Mr. Dan Modebe, who gave an elaborate overview on Drug Demand Reduction. He spoke on the health implication of drug addiction, with particular reference to the arbitrary use of hard drugs such as Cannabis, stimulants, Cocaine, Heroine, Caffeine, etc. His paper also dwelt on trans-boundary movements of toxic and hazardous chemicals and its attendant implications on the populace.
Interactive Session
During the interactive session, participants suggested that the GHS/DDR Seminar should also be extended to secondary and tertiary schools. So also, the need for synergy between ICCON and other regulatory agencies, such as NAFDAC, SON, and CPC (Consumer Protection Council), was advocated.
Generally, participants commended the initiative of ICCON at organizing the public sensitization seminar.
DAY TWO: THURSDAY, 25TH AUGUST, 2011
The Chairman of the day was Mr. Babatunde Abimbolu.
The first presentation was by Dr. (Mrs) Oketola, who continued with her earlier presentation on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of chemicals (GHS).
The second presentation was made by Mr. Leslie Adogame, Executive Director, SRADeV. His lecture dwelt on the “The Role of NGO’s in GHS Implementation”.
The last presentation for the day was made by Mr. Dan Modebe, who spoke extensively on Drug Demand Reduction (DDR), showing different pictures of the effects of drug addiction on consumers.
